Rug Care and Cleaning
Preserve the beauty and longevity of your handcrafted treasures
Your handmade rug is more than a floor covering—it's an investment in artistry and tradition. With proper care, these masterpieces can grace your home for generations. Explore our comprehensive guide to keeping your rug looking its best.
Basic Care & Vacuuming
Designed with real homes in mind, our rugs thrive on regular care. A low suction vacuum (avoid beater or rotating brushes) preserves the fibres and prevents damage. Professional cleaning once a year ensures lasting beauty. A little shedding is normal when unrolling a rug for the first time. Gently vacuum any loose fibres, and if you encounter stray threads, just trim them with scissors to the pile height.

Abrash
Abrash is the subtle stripe effect created by natural variations in hand-spun, hand-dyed yarn. Rather than a flaw, abrash is cherished for giving handmade rugs their distinct character. Each rug tells a story through these gentle tonal shifts.
Fading
All rugs will experience some fading over time if exposed to strong sunlight. At Bizsan, we use the best dyes to resist fading, but no material is completely photostable. Periodically rotating a rug ensures any fading remains even and subtle.

Moths
Moths are drawn to fine natural fibres, preferring dark, undisturbed places. Regular vacuuming removes eggs and deters moths from settling. Avoid mothballs; they can damage the fibres. If a rug falls prey to moths, contact a professional immediately for treatment and cleaning. Prevention is key—keep your rugs in well-ventilated areas and maintain a regular cleaning schedule.
Wool
Wool's durability and rich lanolin content make it ideal for rugs. Spills should be blotted immediately. For minor stains, a pH-neutral soap (like Woolite) diluted in lukewarm water can help. Be sure not to oversaturate the rug. Let mud dry before gently brushing, then spot clean if needed. Grease stains may require a professional cleaner.

Silk
Silk blends luxury and durability, but requires care. Vacuum gently on a low setting to avoid dust buildup. Spot clean as with wool—using minimal cool water—then blot dry. If fibres feel stiff after drying, gently brush them to relax the pile. For significant stains, consult a professional.
Bamboo Silk
Bamboo silk offers a soft sheen similar to traditional silk, though it is more absorbent. We recommend placing bamboo silk rugs away from areas prone to spills. If an accident occurs, blot immediately with an absorbent cloth. Use pH-neutral soap if needed, but limit water exposure. Complex stains are best handled by professionals.

Professional Cleaning
Most tips above suit minor spills. For thorough care or large stains, we advise speaking with a professional rug cleaning service. At Bizsan, we also offer in-house guidance for deeper cleaning. Our experts understand the unique needs of each fiber type and can restore your rug to its original beauty.
Fluff & Loose Threads
New rugs can shed fluff initially; it's not a sign of damage. Vacuum frequently until fluffing subsides, using a gentle setting. If a thread becomes loose, do not pull it—clip it carefully with scissors. This preserves your rug's integrity and prevents further unraveling.
